Parma food tours, honestly compared

Parma sells two very different things under the name food tour: walks through the old town where you eat, and trips into the countryside where you watch cheese and ham being made. Pick the wrong one and you will either miss the copper vats or go home hungry.

Parma has been a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy since 2015, and food tours are the main thing visitors book here. The tours compared below are sold on GetYourGuide or Viator, and every one cancels free up to 24 hours before.

This guide sorts them by type, lays out prices, lengths and ratings side by side, and is frank about the catches: when the dairies are actually working, what the walks do not show you, and where the balsamic vinegar really comes from.

The quick answer

To see Parmigiano and Prosciutto di Parma being made, book a morning production tour: the most booked is the $154 dairy and ham tour with transport (4.9 from 954 reviews), and the cheapest is a $50 organic farm dairy you reach by taxi. To eat your way through town, the private food and wine walk ($129, 5.0 from 651 reviews) is the best rated. Walks show no production, and cheese is made only in the morning.

What kinds of food tour are there in Parma?

Two main kinds: city food walks, where you eat in delis and osterias but see nothing made, and production tours, where a van or your own car takes you to a Parmigiano dairy and usually a Parma ham maker.

  • City food walks (2 to 3.5 hours, $74 to $129): cured meats, Parmigiano, fresh pasta and gelato in the old centre. Great food, no factories.
  • Production tours (2 to 4 hours, $50 to $220): a working dairy, often followed by a Prosciutto di Parma producer in the hills.
  • Longer days ($208 and up): add a traditional balsamic maker near Modena.
  • Something different: a bike ride to a dairy, a pasta class in a hill village, or a winery in the Parma hills.

How do Parma food tours compare?

City walks cost $74 to $129, production tours $50 to $220, and the three-product day $208; ratings run from 4.7 to 5.0.

Which tour shows Parmigiano and Parma ham being made?

The $154 Parmigiano and Parma ham tour is the most booked; it sells on both GetYourGuide and Viator, and we link the GetYourGuide listing because it has more reviews.

The operator, ParmaLook, lists the same tour on GetYourGuide (4.9 from 954 reviews) and on Viator (4.9 from 673). A van takes you from set pickup points in Parma to a working dairy, where you see the making room and the aging rooms and taste several ages, then on to a small family Prosciutto di Parma producer in the hills for the ham and a glass of local wine. Book an early start: the cheese is made in the morning. Everything about the dairy side is in how to visit a Parmigiano dairy, and the ham side in the Parma ham tour guide.

Should you book a food walk or a production tour?

Book a walk to eat a meal's worth of local food in town; book a production tour to see how it is made. The walks show no production at all.

A food walk is lunch or an aperitivo spread across four or five shops: you taste Prosciutto di Parma, Culatello di Zibello and three ages of Parmigiano, but nobody is making them in front of you. A production tour is the reverse: you see the vats, the brine and the hams, and the tasting is smaller. If you have two days, do both: a dairy and ham morning on one, a walk on the other. The walks are compared in Parma food walks compared.

Is the cheese, ham and balsamic tour worth it?

Yes, if you want all three famous products in one day: 6.5 hours for $208. Just know that the balsamic stop is near Modena, because traditional balsamic vinegar is not made in Parma.

Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale is a PDO product of Modena and Reggio Emilia, aged at least 12 years (25 for extravecchio). So any Parma tour with balsamic in it drives east to an acetaia after the dairy and the ham producer. On this tour you taste the 12- and 25-year vinegars at a family maker in Modena; guests single out the Modena stop and the family-run ham producer, which several name as Salumificio Ziveri Claudio. The rules are the same as on the shorter tour: closed shoes, no strollers or large bags, and a late arrival counts as a no-show.

What about the bike tour, pasta class and winery?

They are smaller, well-rated alternatives: the bike tour rides to a dairy and ends with an osteria lunch, the pasta class is in a family home in the hills, and the winery pours four Colli di Parma wines.

The Parmesan factory bike tour ($104, 5.0 from 237 reviews) starts in a courtyard on Strada Garibaldi, includes a bike and helmet (e-bike extra) and keeps groups to 8. Most guests give it five stars, but some report fewer stops or a shorter ride than the four hours suggest. The pasta class in Calestano ($101) is 40 minutes from Parma: Virginia and her mother Nadia teach ravioli and tagliatelle, then serve lunch on the terrace; transport can be arranged when you book. The Oinoe winery ($63) at Guardasone adds a vineyard walk and four wines with cold cuts and Parmigiano.

How do you choose a Parma food tour?

Decide first whether you want to see food made or eat a meal; then pick by budget, time of day and who is coming.

  • You want to see cheese made: a morning production tour, never an afternoon one.
  • One day, no car: the dairy and ham tour in the morning, a food walk in the evening.
  • Tight budget: the $50 organic dairy, or the $74 food and sightseeing walk.
  • Families with a stroller: the private walk; the van tours do not allow strollers.
  • Coming from Bologna or Milan: a Parma tour plus a regular train is usually cheaper than a package; see food tours from Bologna.
  • Rainy weekend: pair a tour with one of the food museums.

Short on time and budget? Two hours of Parma with pastry, three ages of Parmigiano, cured meats and wine.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a food tour in Parma cost?

About $50 to $91 for a dairy visit, $74 to $129 for a city food walk, $154 for the Parmigiano and Parma ham tour with transport, $208 with a balsamic maker near Modena, and $220 for a private morning. Prices are per person from-prices and move with the season.

What is the difference between a food walk and a factory tour?

A food walk stays in central Parma and is about eating in shops and osterias; you see nothing being made. A factory tour goes out to a dairy and usually a ham producer to watch the process, with a smaller tasting.

Is balsamic vinegar made in Parma?

No. Traditional balsamic vinegar is a PDO product of Modena and Reggio Emilia. Parma tours that include it drive on to a maker near Modena, and some Parma walks serve a taste of it.

Should I book on GetYourGuide or Viator?

Book the tour, not the platform. Each tour here is linked on one platform; where a tour sells on both, like the Parmigiano and Parma ham tour, we link the listing with more reviews. Both give free cancellation up to 24 hours before on these tours.
